Getting the basics right…

A quick refresh – we are putting in the foundations for the store which we need in order that we can move items out of part of the building which we will soon be demolishing. With me so far?…

We dug the holes, and prepared them for the concrete. The part nearest the road has mesh in the base, and will be filled up to road height for maximum strength…

…whereas other parts need only 200mm of concrete in the base, with shuttering necessary in some places to contain the ready-mix when it is poured in.

The lorries arrived promptly at 8.30am and delivery began…

…and continued for a surprisingly long time – but then it was quite a volume that needed to go in!

Insulation was fitted between the concrete and the road, to minimise vibration, which is my explanation of why I was on my knees while the men were standing on the job!

And now you can see the one we prepared early (thank you Blue Peter) with the shuttering removed.

We then had a day or two to prepare the remaining holes not lying adjacent to the road by fitting shuttering to direct the concrete into the appropriate places. This was heavy work and so quite hot, made much worse by…

…the unbelievably hot weather we have been ‘enjoying’. The shot belows show how our wonderful green valley became really quite yellow as we had a period of about six weeks with no rain.

Back to the works. Because we hauled out an enormous tree stump, many of our trenches became much bigger than intended, and and not necessarily ideally placed! So we used pink guide lines to help us re-dig some trenches in the right places, and then called in the ready-mix guys again…

As you can see, this time the depth was much less – but it had to vary all over the place as we had periodic rocks that needed to be incorporated.

Above you can see a distinct step where one rock has been covered, and below another step for the same reason…

Once the cement was set, we had a detailed check of the landscape and prepared for the next phase.

We need to remove the shuttering, replace the guidelines, and then get building walls. But first, we are having a couple of days off because I have submitted the last assignment on my six year theology course and I am CELEBRATING!!!!!

    Is Pip recovered?

    1. I will share further progress in a bit. Pips now back at her house, still with broken ankle but is now allowed to put weight on her (broken) ankle, so making progress. Hope you like the picture of her presiding at the Eucharist for the first time!
