More steps in the right direction

Last weekend we had quite a lot of snow, which made the selection of duties rather trickier on Monday. I can’t imagine why, but we decided to work indoors…

…where the ceiling (in several layers, at two different heights, and almost entirely insulated by a layer of animal droppings) in the old gents toilets had to come down..

…after which we started taking out the cubicle walls…

…until they gave up the fight completely and once they were down we pulled up the tatty lino to reveal a pammet floor…

…parts of which look reasonable, and other parts might need re-laying. Weirdly, we also found all the wall tiles had been stuck on the walls before the final level of floor had been poured, so many fragments are pretty nearly impossible to get at. Once we had finished this, the weather had improved and we were ready to tackle the outside world again.

This picture is taken from the path outside the long corridor, to try to show how the area we are digging out will eventually lead us around the building.

And here is the view from the other side of the blocked pathway, with us valiantly trying to dig through. I worry at times that we will never get to the end of this task, because we seem to have moved tons of spoil but there are still tons to move…

…which is where I am glad we published a similar photo last week in which boiler flue above was level with my chest, and as it is now well above my head height, we must have been making some progress.

We are now very close to being able to walk through from the digging area to the building – if we walk over spoil – so whilst I was studying Welsh last Friday, Mike starting digging out by hand, starting from the corridor path, and found a buried step, or possibly three. We have decided to slow down a tad and hand dig the area above the step in case there is another to be found, rather than tackle this search mechanically.

Our best guess is that we have a further week of digging out before we finish this job, but looking at the weather forecast here, we may well be changing to different tasks next week anyway…
