Some you win, and some we lost!

Last week was a week in two halves. I will start by reminding you of the wall we were building…

…and the builders amongst you will likely be able to see our rookie error from this photo.

On Tuesday we prepared the right hand floor space and…

…took delivery of the concrete whilst our trusty band of helpers prepared to barrow the concrete over the floor.

Once it was relatively evenly distributed, we tamped it down using the side of the long ladders as our tool.

Much of the bulk we managed fairly simply, but the further we progressed, the harder it became to not need to walk over the concrete we had already levelled…

…but we managed to work it out in the end. Sadly we were less able to manage our new wall.

The concrete floor had not even set by Wednesday when the building inspector came to call. He passed all of the foundations and floors, but he sucked through his teeth when he saw our wall and all-but asked us which cowboys had built it. Turns out, we shouldn’t have blocked the end in because it compromises the insulation gap (and also our insulation was too thick – and so an insufficient air gap)..so that there wall was going to have to go…

It’s not often that we have to unpick our stitches but, as you can see, we are neither of us wildly happy about it!

We removed the minimum possible number of blocks, out came the insulation…

…(random photo as we used offcuts of carpeting to cover the wooden floor in the turret, which has made the sitting room MUCH warmer)…

…and by the end of the day, the wall was rebuilt without the end, and with the correct thickness of insulation in situ (with correct air gap!) and properly tied to the wall.

Now, though, we are back on track! We are excited that all the foundations and floors are now in place and so…the only way is up!
